What Are Advantages of Acrylic Sheet over Ordinary Glass?

Oct. 13, 2021

Acrylic panels are a similar alternative to mineral glass. Both acrylic and glass have obvious benefits and it is often difficult to know which one is more beneficial than the other. Acrylic is the common name for polymethyl methacrylate or PMMA and is produced by many manufacturers worldwide. For many applications, acrylic is the preferred choice - here are some of the benefits of choosing plastic over traditional glass.

Durability

Because it is stronger than glass, acrylic is also more robust and durable in most applications. Glass is extremely fragile, even when purchased thicker, and can be dangerous when broken. Acrylic is also weather resistant and can be used in all weather conditions for up to 20 years without damage or deterioration - an excellent quality when using acrylic panels for glass windows or outdoor projects.

Weight

Acrylic's light weight is one of the reasons it is such a popular alternative to glass in a range of applications such as glazing and roofing. Glass is much denser and therefore heavier than acrylic, which is less than half the weight of glass. The fact that acrylic is so much lighter makes it ideal for DIY projects as it is much easier to use and handle.

Cost

Compared to glass, acrylic is often a more cost effective option as it is lighter and cheaper to transport. Add to this the advantages of acrylic over glass and it is easy to see why so many people choose to use plastic over glass.

Transparency

Acrylic offers the same level of transparency as optical glass, but it allows more light to pass through while still filtering out UV light. Acrylic has a slightly better light transmission of 92% compared to 90% for glass. When the glass sheet reaches a certain thickness it starts to look cloudy or milky, which restricts light and provides less transparency.

Impact resistance

Acrylic is much stronger than glass and therefore more impact resistant - up to 20 times more impact resistant. In fact, it is often used as an alternative to glass in applications where safety and security are an issue. Acrylic is more resistant to pressure and is more likely to bend rather than break, making it a safer material.

Modern acrylic is often used in a variety of applications which often take advantage of its natural transparency and the impact resistance of some variants. Common uses include lenses, acrylic studs, paint, security barriers, medical equipment, LCD screens and furniture. Due to its clarity, it is also often used for windows, tanks and fencing around exhibitions.  You can find more about its applications in LINGBIAO Plastic.
